he 47 papers in this proceedings publication comprise selected oral and poster papers submitted and presented at the International Symposium on Hydrology in the Humid Tropic Environment which took place from 17 to 23 November 1996 in Kingston, Jamaica. This symposium followed other IAHS symposia on the humid tropics—the first was convened in 1983 in Hamburg, Germany*, and the second in 1993 in Yokohama, Japan†.
