IAHS Deputy Secretary General
Towards the end of October, IAHS invited nominations/applications for the newly established temporary position of Deputy Secretary General to support the President and contribute to the effective coordination of Association activities. We are pleased announce that, following the review of submissions from the pool of eligible applicants, the role of Deputy Secretary General has been awarded to Dr Ankit Agarwal.

Dr Ankit Agarwal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hydrology at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR). He holds a PhD in Hydrology from the University of Potsdam, Germany, and also serves as a Visiting Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Germany. His research focuses on understanding and predicting hydro-meteorological extremes, emphasizing methodological innovation, physical understanding and societal relevance. Ankit’s numerous honours include the Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award (European Geosciences Union), INAE Young Associate 2025, INAE Young Engineer Award 2025, IEI Young Engineers Award (2023–24), Institute Research Fellowship (IRF) at IIT Roorkee, Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society (UK) and membership in the Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS). He also leads several major research projects under Indo-German, Indo-French, Indo-Portuguese BRICS, SPARC and Monsoon Mission-III collaborations, reflecting his strong commitment to international scientific cooperation and institutional development.
The Deputy Secretary General will assist the President in following the ongoing initiatives and activities across IAHS, ensuring effective communication and coordination within the Association. The Deputy will also be expected to act on behalf of the Secretary General when the latter is temporarily unable to attend events or carry out specific duties due to unforeseen circumstances. This role is designed to complement the functions of the Secretary General, fostering continuity and efficiency in the operation of IAHS governance.
