IAHS Academy - 2027

IAHS Academy 2027

Building on the success of the first IAHS Academy (Ningbo, January 2026), the second edition aims to further strengthen IAHS capacity-building activities by expanding the scientific offer, enlarging participation, and consolidating the Academy as a flagship global training initiative for early-career hydrologists.

The 2027 IAHS Academy is jointly organized by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (EIT) and Tsinghua University, Beijing

Dates and venue

The dates of the 2027 IAHS Academy are set for 11–17 January 2027 and will be hosted at the 宁波东方理工大学  Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo (EIT)

Lecturers and topics

Fuqiang Tian, Jie Chen, Dedi Liu, Jiabo Yin: Hydrological Modeling and Digital Twin AI Technology

Enrique Vivoni: Open-Source Distributed Hydrologic Modeling

Michele Lancia: Aquifer Dynamics and Groundwater Modeling

Domenico Capolongo: Remote Sensing for Hydrogeomorphic Modelling

Simon Papalexiou: Analysis and Simulation of Rainfall

Cyndi Vail-Castro, Malena Orduna Alegria: Assessing Coupled Human-Water Systems

Organization and general program

The 6 courses will run in parallel for 7 full days - Monday 11 January to Sunday 17 January 2027. The first day and last day sessions will have all participants in plenary mode. The courses include lecturing and hands on with applied hydrological science exercises that will be guided and supported by keynote lecturers, invited lecturers and teaching assistants.

The course fees cover accommodation, meals and coffee breaks for the entire duration of your stay in Ningbo from Sunday 10 January (check in day) to 17 January (check out day). On the last day of the Academy, 17 January, all students who will have been organised into groups, will present the work developed during the week with practical case studies based on the knowledge and analytical skills learnt during the week.

Please note that the IAHS Academy events are strictly organized and developed as IN-PRESENCE training events gathering a critical mass of participants and lecturers in one place at the same time.

The detailed programme, course schedule and organizational information will be published in the forthcoming circulars.

Financial support by IAHS SYSTA awards

Applicants who have been notified of their acceptance for the IAHS Academy may apply to the IAHS Sivapalan Young Scientists Travel Awards (SYSTA), if they meet the requirements for the SYSTA scholarship (details below). To ensure sufficient time for application evaluation, IAHS Academy applicants who are eligible for, and also wish to apply for, SYSTA must submit their IAHS Academy application by 30 September 2026

The aims of SYSTA are to:

1. strengthen attendance of IAHS meetings from financially disadvantaged countries (FDCs) to address the currently low attendance,
2. foster high quality science among a new generation of hydrologists.

SYSTA awards are available to eligible early career scientists attending IAHS events. The SYSTA initiative is named in recognition of the hydrologist Prof. M. Sivapalan. More information is available here
