The International Commission on Surface Water (ICSW) is a scientific commission of IAHS that advances the science and practice of surface-water hydrology. The Commission focuses on the dynamics, variability, and management of rivers, streams, and freshwater systems within the hydrological cycle, strengthening links between fundamental research and practical applications. It supports understanding of surface-water processes and their role in environmental and societal systems, contributing to sustainable water management and resilient hydrological systems.
Its activities promote research and collaboration on surface-water processes, with a particular focus on hydrological extremes, including floods and droughts, and their implications for risk, forecasting, and management. Increasing emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches that connect hydrology with ecology, water quality, and socio-economic dimensions.
Keywords: surface water; freshwater systems; flow regimes; hydrological extremes; hydrological processes; water resources management; ecohydrology; water quality.
