Pacific Island Countries & Territories

A great milestone for hydrological capacity development in Oceania.

The inaugural early-career Ridge-to-Reef Training & Social Hydrology Workshop was successfully delivered in Fiji through the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) Working Group in the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS)

The programme brought together early-career participants and water practitioners for practical, hands-on training across marine, land, modelling, and social-hydrology activities.
This past September programme presented the first phase of the IAHS-PICTs capacity-development initiative in Oceania. We thank all the participants from across the Oceania Region participating in the hybrid event. The second phase will take place in November 2026.

We sincerely thank IAHS - International Association of Hydrological Sciences for funding and supporting this IAHS-PICTs initiative, and particularly IAHS President Prof. Salvatore Grimaldi for his continued support of hydrological capacity development in the Oceania Region. We also thank the Asia Pacific Network (APN) for its support in laying the foundation for this initiative.

We are also very grateful to Dr. Fatima Kastali , Prof. Aldo Fiori for their contributions; Mr. Aklesh Kumar and the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) for hosting the training activities; and Dr. Nicholas Metherall and the Pacific Community (SPC) for hosting and facilitating the modelling workshop.
This is an important first step toward establishing a sustained IAHS-PICTs training pathway in Oceania, focused on hands-on learning, early-career development, regional networking, and stronger hydrological research capacity across Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

See you in November!
